What it is
A typical menstrual cycle is 21β35 days, with bleeding for two to seven days. Some variation is normal, especially in the first years after periods begin and in the years before menopause.
Period problems include painful periods, heavy bleeding, irregular or missed periods, and premenstrual symptoms such as mood changes and bloating.
Common signs
- Cramps severe enough to miss school or work
- Soaking a pad every one to two hours, or passing large clots
- Periods closer than 21 or further than 35 days apart
- Bleeding between periods or after sex
- Mood swings, breast tenderness or bloating before periods
Common causes
- Hormonal changes β puberty, PCOS, thyroid problems, perimenopause
- Fibroids or endometriosis
- Stress, rapid weight change or intense exercise
- Low iron (anaemia), which also worsens tiredness
