Hair Loss

Key points

  • 50–100 hairs a day is normal
  • Many causes β€” the pattern matters
  • Simple blood tests often help
  • Regrowth takes months, not weeks

What it is

Everyone sheds around 50–100 hairs a day as part of the natural hair cycle. Hair loss becomes a concern when shedding is clearly more than usual, the parting or crown looks thinner, or bald patches appear.

There are several kinds of hair loss β€” gradual thinning that runs in families, sudden shedding a few months after an illness or stress, and patchy loss such as alopecia areata. Each has different causes, so a proper assessment matters.

Common signs

  • More hair on the pillow, comb or in the shower drain
  • A widening parting or thinning at the crown
  • A receding hairline
  • Round, smooth bald patches
  • Breakage, dryness or an itchy, flaky scalp

Common causes

  • Family tendency (pattern thinning)
  • Fever, illness, surgery or childbirth β€” shedding often starts 2–3 months later
  • Low iron, vitamin D or B12, and thyroid imbalance
  • Stress and very restrictive dieting
  • Tight hairstyles, frequent heat styling or harsh chemical treatments
  • Scalp conditions such as dandruff or fungal infection

Everyday care that helps

  • Eat regular, balanced meals with enough protein, fruit and vegetables
  • Use a mild shampoo and avoid very hot water on the scalp
  • Let hair air-dry where possible; limit straighteners and dryers
  • Avoid tight ponytails, buns and braids
  • Ask your doctor about basic blood tests β€” haemoglobin, thyroid, vitamin D and B12 β€” before starting supplements

When to see a doctor promptly

Please get medical help soon if:
  • Hair is coming out in large clumps or very quickly
  • Patches are red, painful, scaly or oozing
  • Hair loss comes with weight change, tiredness or irregular periods
  • Eyebrows, eyelashes or body hair are also falling

How we approach it at Gursagar

We take a full history β€” when the hair fall began, its pattern, recent illness or stress, diet, periods and family history β€” and examine the scalp. Where useful we suggest simple blood tests so nothing important is missed.

Dr. Shah then prescribes classical homoeopathic medicine chosen for you individually, and progress is reviewed at follow-ups. Regrowth, when it happens, takes months, so we set realistic expectations from the first visit.

Common questions

Is daily hair fall normal?

Yes, 50–100 hairs a day is normal. Sudden heavy shedding or visible thinning is worth checking.

Will oiling stop hair fall?

Oil can help dryness and breakage of the hair shaft, but it does not change hair fall that comes from inside the body.

Can I consult online?

Yes. Clear photos of the scalp in daylight help a lot in an online consultation.
