What it is
Alopecia areata is a condition in which the body's immune system affects the hair roots, causing hair to fall out in round or oval patches. The hair roots themselves are usually not destroyed.
It can affect the scalp, beard, eyebrows or other body hair, and can begin at any age, including childhood.
Common signs
- One or more smooth, round bald patches

- Patches on the beard, eyebrows or eyelashes
- Small dents or pits in the nails in some people
