Understanding Tonsillitis

Sore throat, difficulty swallowing and fever — what tonsillitis is, home care, and when it needs prompt attention.

Written by Dr. Randeep Singh Shah, Consultant Homoeopathic Physician · Updated October 2026 · 4 min read

Key points

  • Infected, swollen tonsils
  • Usually viral
  • Warm fluids and rest help
  • Breathing difficulty = urgent

What it is

The tonsils are two small glands at the back of the throat that help fight infection. Tonsillitis is when they become infected and swollen, usually by a virus and sometimes by bacteria.

It is most common in school-age children. Some children have repeated episodes over several years.

Common signs

  • Sore throat and pain on swallowing
  • Red, swollen tonsils, sometimes with white patches
  • Fever and tiredness
  • Tender glands in the neck
  • Bad breath, and ear ache in some cases

Common causes

  • Viral infections, such as colds
  • Bacterial infection (strep throat)
  • Close contact at school or home
  • Cold drinks and weather changes may worsen symptoms for some

Everyday care that helps

  • Rest and plenty of warm fluids
  • Warm salt-water gargles for older children and adults
  • Soft, easy-to-swallow foods
  • Keep separate cups and utensils during an episode
  • Wash hands often

When to see a doctor promptly

Please get medical help soon if:
  • Difficulty breathing or drooling
  • Unable to swallow fluids
  • Severe pain on one side, or a muffled voice
  • Fever lasting more than three days
  • Stiff neck or a rash
“Repeated tonsillitis deserves a careful history, not just another course of medicine.”— Dr. Randeep Singh Shah

How we approach it at Gursagar

We look at how often episodes happen, how long they last, the child's general health, sleep, appetite and family history.

Dr. Shah prescribes classical homoeopathic medicine chosen for the child individually, and we follow the frequency of episodes over time. Any treatment advised by the child's doctor continues.

Common questions

Will my child need surgery?

Only a small number of children with very frequent or severe episodes are advised surgery; your ENT doctor will guide you.

Is it contagious?

The infections that cause it can spread, so good hygiene helps.
