Neck Pain

Key points

  • Wear of neck discs and joints
  • Screen and phone posture matter
  • Movement breaks every 30–40 minutes
  • Arm weakness or walking difficulty = urgent

What it is

Cervical spondylosis is age-related wear of the discs and joints in the neck. It is very common after the age of 40, and increasingly seen earlier in people who spend long hours at desks and phones.

Many people have changes on an X-ray without pain. Symptoms appear when the joints become stiff or nearby nerves are pressed.

Common signs

  • Neck pain and stiffness
  • Pain spreading to the shoulders or between the shoulder blades
  • Headache starting at the back of the head
  • Tingling, numbness or weakness in the arms or hands
  • Grinding or clicking with neck movement

Things that make it worse

  • Long hours looking down at a phone or laptop
  • Poor sitting posture
  • Sleeping on a very high or very flat pillow
  • Lifting heavy loads on the head or shoulders
  • Stress and tight muscles

Everyday care that helps

  • Raise the screen to eye level; hold the phone up, not down
  • Take a short break every 30–40 minutes to move the neck and shoulders
  • Use one medium-height pillow that keeps the neck level
  • Gentle neck exercises as advised; avoid sudden jerky movements
  • Warm compresses for stiffness

When to see a doctor promptly

Please get medical help soon if:
  • Weakness in the arms or legs, or clumsy hands
  • Difficulty walking or loss of balance
  • Loss of bladder or bowel control
  • Neck pain after an accident or fall
  • Neck pain with fever or unexplained weight loss
β€œFor neck pain, the phone and the pillow often matter as much as the X-ray.”— Dr. Randeep Singh Shah

How we approach it at Gursagar

We take a detailed history of the pain, posture, work, sleep and any tingling or weakness, review your X-ray or MRI, and examine the neck and arms.

Common questions

Do I need an MRI?

Not usually; it is advised when there is weakness, numbness or other warning signs.

Is a collar helpful?

Only for short periods if advised β€” long use can weaken the neck muscles.
